A Guide to Protaras
Protaras is located on the eastern side of the island of Cyprus and is a popular beach resort with both Cypriots and tourists.

Part of the district of ‘free Famagusta’ Protaras is in the (southern) Republic of Cyprus and has some of the island’s best beaches and nature walks.

It is also close to the party capital of Cyprus, the infamous Ayia Napa which attracts hundreds of clubbers and party goers from Europe every year.

One of the scenic sights of Protaras is the Profitis Elias church which is perched up on a hill overlooking this beach resort and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a modern church which was originally built in the Byzantine style to replace a small room that was being used as a church.

No trip to Protaras would be complete without going on the walk to the church and climbing to the top. People who are not as active as they might like should be warned that there are around 100 steps to the top which are quite steep. From the top there is a stunning view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside and if you go there in the evenings the church is lit up making it even more charming.

There are a whole host of water sports to do on the beaches of Protaras. These are a good way to spend time cooling down in the sea in respite from the soaring summer temperatures.

Try jet-skiing, parasailing, sailing or renting some kayaks for the day. If swimming in the sea is not really your thing then almost all of the hotels, villas and apartments have swimming pools or access to swimming pools.
If you like walking you should visit the idyllic Fig Tree bay in Protaras. There are also quite a few rocky promontories which hide golden sandy beaches. These are great places to go for a walk.

To get to Protaras follow signs for Ayia Napa from any of the main motorways in Cyprus. It is about equidistant from Limassol or Nicosia at just over an hour’s drive, or half an hour from Larnaca.
